Your rights to reimbursement for healthcare in Belgium

The Belgian social security system does not provide healthcare free of charge.

Nonetheless, facilities are set up such as:

  • à Patient’s contribution: the social security authorities refund part of your doctor’s fees. The own contribution is the part not refunded.
  • à Third-party payment: Payment made on behalf of one person (patient) to a second person (ex: doctor, chemist, etc) party by a third person (social security for benefits received by the first person (party). Eliminating the person (party) language, these sorts of payments are a standard method of buying health.

Hospitalisation:

You have to give your SIS card (issued by Partenamut) when hospitalised. You will then only pay for what is at your charge. Please note that the hospital is up to your choice. Please note: your personal contribution will not be the same charge whether you choose for a private, double or common bedroom. This is the reason why we strongly recommend to register with a hospitalisation insurance (+ link to Hosptalia).

Medical care:

You pay the health provider (doctor, dentist, etc.) and then you submit the healthcare certificate to get reimbursement. To be identified, affix a sticker in the frame located at the top of the certificate ans then send it to Partenamut. You are reimbursed in the following way : you pay the full price to the doctor and the “mutualité” reimburses you retroactively. You can keep track of your reimbursements via our online member access : partenamut@home

Purchase of medicines:

Do not forget to present your SIS card when going to the chemist. Like this, you will only pay what is at your charge.
